2 cruises on Holland America's Maasdam

South Pacific 24 day Cruise
South Pacific 24 day Cruise Nanqi

April 24 2019 to May 7 2019.

We skipped NIUE which is a beautiful island because the cargo ship which delivers water, food, and other supplies arrived early on the same day we were supposed to dock.  That ship trumps all other ships because it is the livelihood of the islanders that are at risk.

Since Sarah and Ross arrived on the Big Island, we got busy:

Beaches includes Hapuna Beach, Ho'Okena beach AKA Gray Sand Beach, Mahai'ula Beach, Spencer Beach, Black Sand Beach formed in 2018 from the new volcano eruptions.

Took a 5.5 mile Hike on Ala Kahakai Historic Trail from Soencer beach to Hapuna.

Finally visited the Volcano National Park and took the Kilauea Iki Hike.

Visited the small but impressive Lava Tree Park.

We got to the big island and moved into our vacation rental.  It is very nice in a neighborhood area.  Address: 82-953 Aka Ala Street, Captain Cook.  3 bedroom 2 bath.  It is only our second trip together to the big island and we stayed near KONA last time.  Looks like there is not many attractive beaches in this part but lots of trails.  We will have to drive to Kapuna a few times to get beach fix for Sarah and Ross.

On our drive yesterday, we found some fresh caught fish by a guy from the roadside.  They are Menpachi or Soldierfish.  About 8 inches long and very mild flavored.  To clean and descale was not that easy.  But the dinner was GREAT.

Captain Cook Monument Trail is within walking distance.  The snorkeling at the end is supposed to be fabulous.  Since we are not snorkeling this trip and it is a straight up and down 3 mile trail, not sure if we are going to do it.

Ho'okena Beach Park is 25 minutes drive away.  We checked it out yesterday.  Since it is gray sand, it looks dirty.  It has a camp ground on the beach and lots of locals there.  The bay looks peaceful and water is calm.
